I've been observing personal computing behavior for a long time, and now I have some things to say. Here are my two cents about computing, music, software, and related topics.

*Note: I'm posting this for Merv, who sent this to me on May 10 after getting stymied by the coding bug I had left running around on Mars. The bug effectively prevented Safari 2.0.4 (and earlier) users from typing a space key in the comments field. I believe that's now fixed... *

i, too, am looking forward to your review of SAM. for several years, i've been using "auto-hide" 1.3.6, which was abandoned by it's developer at least 4 years ago. there was a 1.3.7 and a 1.3.8, but they were both extremely buggy for most users. many asked for 1.3.6 to be reposted, but i don't think it ever was. fortunately, i had a copy in a backup, and i use it to this day.

the only caveat to using auto-hide is that 2 or 3 times a week, its configuration window will appear out of nowhere -- even though i didn't summon it. it's harmless; i just dismiss the window and keep working. but i put up with it because auto-hide has a feature that none of the newer apps (like "spirited away") has -- a "never hide when switching to" list, which is independent from the typical "never hide when switching away from" list. that feature has more uses than i can name. for example, typically, i have most of my apps hide when i switch away from them. but there's an app called "free ruler" that i occasionally call up to measure items on the screen. so i told auto-hide "never hide when switching to free ruler." this way, an app that normally hides will *not* hide, when i switch to the ruler, because i'm switching in order to measure something.

well, this is more like an article than a comment. :-) if you want more info, i'll be happy to discuss with you. i'd love to find an up-to-date replacement for auto-hide -- with the same features -- so this topic is of great interest to me.

thanks.

Thanks for the link to my article... I look forward to your article on SAM... I've been very happy with my decision to just use apps in full screen mode and skip virtual desktops. Using Command-Tab or the dock to switch and Expose to see my nice clean desktop has worked wonders. I save ram and get everything done that I need.

Strange that having a smaller screen 12" seems to make using the full screen easier or more of a necessity... I thought that having a bigger screen 15" with the MBP would get me out of the full screen habit but it has not. I think if I worked more at my 17" iMac I would be more likely to use smaller application windows and thus more likely to have desktop and clutter of multiple windows.

Hi,

-- Given my nondisclosure agreement with Apple, I'm not going to say anything about Spaces that isn't revealed in Apple's own presentation of it on the Leopard website.

I wished other some other Mac developers were as ethical as you are....

Happy Holidays.
