[...] Safari 3.0: There was one trick shown at MacWorld, with the new version of Safari that I’m drooling for: Web Clips. It’s in the first paragraph on this page. You can basically grab part of a web page and turn it into a dashboard widget. Check out a good overview of what else is cool in Safari 3.0 here at Musings from Mars. [...]

Interesting article, but I have to add something:

Opera is already capable of trick one and will be in near future in case of trick two.

You can actually drag Opera’s tabs on your desktop and create a new window. You can also easily drag tabs between multiple windows.
In fact, I think Opera can do more by drag-and-drop as Safari 3: You can add a site to your bookmarks by just dragging it into the bookmark panel. Or to any of your bars, except the menu bar.

Opera will be capable of trick 2 by version 9.10, to be released soon. The find-as-you-type function already does highlight all words searched for, but with version 9.10 you will be able to define the color of the highlighting.

But really, Safari is going to be a great browser. Sad it’s available only for the Mac.

About the form resizer, there's no need for a extension in firefox, just use this bookmarklet from the man in blue. It works in firefox, IE, and safari (although the icons didn't change correctly in safari).

Moritz, see the update near the top of the article that I've added about the textarea resizing. One thing to remember is that even if a user resizes a textarea during a session, it will only affect that one session and will not affect the page design for anyone else... or even their future sessions.

Andrew, I haven't tried IE7 yet, but it sounds like they're implementing a feature I raved about a couple of months ago in Shiira, another great WebKit-based browser from Japan. They likewise have a "Tabs Expose" feature that I will find extremely useful. See my article on Shiira from June, which also features some screencasts of Shiira and Firefox: <a href="http://www.musingsfrommars.org/2006/08/another-lovely-browser-shiira-2-beta-leads-the-way.html" rel="nofollow">Another Lovely Browser! Shiira 2.0 Beta Leads the Way to Ideal Tabbed Browsing</a>

Frank Young, sorry about the screencasts... I let my desire for good visual design get the better of my usability smarts. In this case, I think I can be forgiven, since the videos are so short. I would never have done the movies this way if they were longer (see the way I did movies in the <a href="http://www.musingsfrommars.org/2006/09/nextstep-in-1992-if-only-we-had-known.html" rel="nofollow">article on NextStep</a> last month). To help out, I did add an audio controller so at least you don't have to listen to me drone on. Also, if you didn't figure it out, you can stop the videos at any time by clicking on them. Presenting QuickTime movies more than one at a time is an art form that still seems to be evolving... I'm still experimenting and learning.

Hey nice scoops. i don't really use Safari, but these new features make me want to switch back from Camino, lol!!!

BTW, your screencasts are a bit counter-intuitive, IMHO. It was only through trial and error that I figured out how to start the screencast by double-clicking on it. Also, there is no control bar present for the video. My boss came top my cubicle to talk to me and all I wanted to do was pause the video so that I could watch it from where I left off at. Without that, it makes it kinda hard to really enjoy the video cause you end up spending more time trying to figure what exactly is going on with the controls.

Just something to think about for the future maybe. Thanks again for the scoops on Safari!

All very cool, but no mention of whether we'll see something that i've personally been waiting for, and something which i've been making great use of in IE7, and that is the ability to zoom out and see all your open tabs at once, any news on that?

As I recall, those working on the nightly builds turned the feature on by default at first in order to work out the bugs in its implementation, but turned it off once they were satisfied with how it was working. To my knowledge, the "off by default" behavior is how it's supposed to work, so the "resizable all the time" textareas might be left over from an older version of Webkit in the 3.0 preview.

That sounds pretty interesting. I'm looking forward to Safari enhencements.
I do still think that each one of them: Safari, FireFox, Opera and Shiira do have their very strongpoints.

This seems to be adding a lot of missing features to Safari. And enhencements that are very interesting. Still in the end I'd love to have it do HTML,CSS and JavaScript 100% conform.

I curious though: what about designs that expect their textarea to be precisely sized? It might be "wrong" but I would not rule this out. It would be very interesting if there is a "force" switch or something that would let the designer prevent safari from resizing the textbox?

just my thoughts...
