I've been observing personal computing behavior for a long time, and now I have some things to say. Here are my two cents about computing, music, software, and related topics.

Encro, good point about BwanaDik that I hadn't noticed... I'm going to update the article to add that information.

Monoclast, thanks for reminding me about DynDNS! You're right... I should mention that as an option to worrying about ever-changing IP addresses. About 5 years ago, I used DynDNS heavily in running a web server off of my old G3 iMac... I had a custom DNS name and everything! When I moved that to a hosting service a couple of years later, I didn't maintain my DynDNS address... though I suspect my account is still there! Maybe I should revive it.

I have to say I am surprised you didn't mention services such as http://DynDNS.com that give you a free domain name that points to your dynamic IP address along with a freeware client application that notifies the service any time your IP address changes. Many hardware routers have built-in clients compatible with DynDNS and similar services. I started using DynDNS years ago for my own home cable-modem-based connection as well as other family members whose computers I maintain remotely. I haven't had to figure out what my external IP address is in *ages*, literally! I've never looked back!

I've followed a similar path. Originally I was using BwanaDik but become annoyed with its use of my CPU, even with Auto-Update being disabled it still seems to poll heavily or otherwise its doing something else in the background.

I'm now using the IP Widget which seems to work pretty well and thanks for sharing the QuickSilver hint as I had forgotten about that script.

I'm taking a look at IP now :)
