Leland, I like the site, and I like the detailed shootout. It's astonishing how many people still think that Dell's machines are always less expensive than Macs. Head to head comparisons like this are hard to refute. I'll have to send this URL to some of my Windows-using friends.

I really like the comparisons you make between the Mac and Windows world. I think they are really useful (together with your presentations on Tiger). Maybe one day I will become a Mac user, too. But lot of things need to happen until than.

A couple of days ago I checked again on the Mac offerings (I need a machine for home use). My observation was this: you might be right that Apple beats Dell in price/features for similar items. However people's needs are much more sophisticated. For ex I want an 'ok' machine with a bigger monitor (like a 20" dell). In Apple world I can get this by buying the 20" IMac or buy a mini mac and a 20" monitor to it. In Dell world i can go with a pretty good system and their 20" monitor. My limit is around $1000. For that I can get a much better configuration at Dell than at Apple (the only option being a mini mac, since the $1200 is valid for a 17" IMac which will not do and the 20" IMac being to pricey). Sure I would love to have Tiger on my system. But that is not all.

As a conclusion, why Tiger is losing against Windows is not the price. It is because Windows (or Linux) I can install on any pc configuration I like, while Tiger comes only on Mac's. Would Apple open up Tiger for "any" PC I would switch to it in a heartbeat. And so would others. And then you could talk about changing the os world. Until then it comes to 1000 hardware options for Windows/Linux against a few combinations for Tiger. And that is a game which is very hard win.

respectfully,
Attila
